Electronic Companion: GPS
It might not be as known as now, but the Global Positioning Satellite System that we use today has had a dark past. It was first developed for military application, during the time of the tumultuous Operation Desert Storm. One could only say that if not for the GPS system, the success of the war would have been a longer and bloodier road. The GPS system became the eye in the sky for Americans, they could sweep mines with ease, bomb rebel bases with little problem, and navy fire is more accurate now. GPS did not see any rest even after the war. It is still being used by the military for space and satellite monitoring.
But without us realizing it much, or if we did with as much surprise, the GPS system has found itself in our daily lives. We may be waging the Desert Storm or we may just be going to our office, but every day is a war for both urban and rural folks. Sometimes we see it in plain sight, and sometimes, you have to look a little closer to realize that GPS has been there to assist you all along.
In example, our commercial airplanes and jets that we fly on. Yes, the radio tower\’s function is to assist and provide an eye for the airplane, but the GPS system is an invaluable feature for airplanes, or in areas where radio towers could not see. The chances of airplanes crashing onto one another has lessened. Nor aircraft that have mysteriously vanished or disappeared from the radar. GPS has become an invaluable tool for tracking missing, lost and crashed aircraft.
GPS is also seeing use in the field of construction. With as much accuracy as possible needed in works that require delicate measurements, GPS is able to provide linear tracking even with the disability of lasers (in the case of tunnel digging for example). When you are miles underneath the earth with little bearings, it is easy to get lost especially in a maze of tunnels. The only thing you can rely on is on a GPS device.
Cars too. It is like almost every automatic car has GPS installed in the dashboard. These helpful applications give help to lost drivers. Trucking companies use GPS to monitor all of its units and provide a quick update to customers who are waiting for their packages. The cases of wayward travelers and lost campervans have dramatically decreased thanks to the GPS system.
